During my career as an educator, I have had the privilige of working in an energizing school environment, one that encouraged innovation and motivated learning. This experience led me to co-found Strategies for Action in 2007 based on the belief that everyone learns best when they are actively engaged in their own learning. Teachers and students must have every opportunity to make personal connections with new ideas and content. By recognizing that this doesnít happen in one lesson or one workshop, Strategies for Actions endeavors to develop a sustained partnership with schools for classroom instruction and professional development.
Before starting Strategies for Action, I spent over ten years in the public school classroom as an Elementary Teacher. I had the opportunity to lead Staff Development Committee and served as a Continuous School Improvement facilitator. Most importantly, I taught some amazing 2nd, 4th and 5th grade students and worked to engage them in their learning through inquiry, guided reading, brain-based learning and responsive classroom strategies. I encouraged my students to take initiative and engage in the world around them.
My next life in education began when I took on the role as a curriculum supervisor, coordinating Social Studies instruction for K-12 and various student services programs. Life was never dull as I served as Project Director for two Teaching American History grants and administrated several other federal grants providing mental health services to students. I also became a certified trainer in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program and coordinated bullying prevention efforts for the district's schools. I have written several childrenís books and am the co-author of Virginia is for Learners.
I am a 'Hokie' at heart and hold a Masterís degree in Educational Leadership from Radford University and two Bachelorís degrees in Elementary Education and Communication from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia. I have been married to my best friend for the past 10 years and we have two young children, Avery and Alex.
